- CTF Demands Taxpayer Protection and Balanced Budget Legislation Now, Election Promises Are Not Good Enough -
OTTAWA: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) has written a stern Letter to Premier Harris demanding that he honour his May 30, 1995 pledge to make Balanced Budgets and Taxpayer Protection Legislation the law in Ontario.
"During a major news conference in 1995, Mr. Harris signed a pledge to immediately pass this legislation if elected," stated CTF Federal Director Walter Robinson. "By failing to act in four years he has betrayed his pledge to taxpayers and missed a glorious opportunity to leave a positive public policy legacy for future generations."
"The Blueprint election platform promises that Taxpayer Protection and Balanced Budget Legislation is a priority for the next mandate, but that's not good enough," said Robinson. "Mr. Harris has already broken his promises on this issue, why should we believe him now "
Enclosed is an excerpt from Mr. Robinson's letter to Premier Harris:
Mr. Premier, you signed a solemn pledge and made a commitment to Ontario taxpayers in 1995. You have not honoured this commitment. Your credibility on this issue is non- existent. Why should anyone now believe that you will implement these crucial pieces of legislation should the voters of Ontario give you another mandate Your record on this issue is abysmal and speaks for itself.
In just under ten years the CTF has grown to become Canada' s largest and most effective taxpayer advocacy organization with 80,000 supporters from coast to coast. A complete record of CTF policy positions and accomplishments can be found on at Accomplishments.
